Growing up in Genk, Belgium, Max was just four and a half years old when he first got his hands on a quad bike. 'He was at a race track near our home with family members,' recalls Jos. The young Verstappen's enthusiasm for speed didn't go unnoticed, as he would often try to join his father on the track, much to Jos' dismay.

Jos, who had retired from competitive racing by then, wanted to ensure Max didn't start too early in his own racing career. 'I didn't want him to start too early,' he says. However, it was inevitable that Max would follow in his father's footsteps, given their family's deep-rooted love for motorsports.

Max's mother, Sophie Kumpen, a former top-level karter, had already introduced him to the world of karting at a young age. 'He grew up with go-karts,' Jos proudly states. The Verstappen household was filled with the sounds of engines revving and wheels screeching as Max honed his skills on various vehicles, from quad bikes to electric jeeps.

One particular incident stood out during this period: an accident involving a quad bike that left Max with a scratched helmet. 'On the second or third day after he got it, he went on two wheels, had to adjust the steering and went side-on into the wall,' Jos recounts. Luckily, Max was wearing protective gear at the time.

As the years went by, Max continued to develop his skills under his father's guidance. By 2003, Jos' own F1 career had come to an end, but he remained heavily involved in karting and coaching young drivers like his son. 'I think that's a good age to start – at least they understand a bit better,' Jos remarks.

The rest, as they say, is history. Max went on to dominate the Formula 1 world championships, becoming the first Dutch driver to win the title in over 40 years. His remarkable journey from humble beginnings on a quad bike in his family's garden serves as an inspiration to aspiring young drivers and a testament to the Verstappen family's unwavering passion for motorsports.
